The Impotence of the Turkish Diaspora

And I am not talking about erectile disfunction. According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the current number of Turkish expatriates is 4,782,348. That's a bit on the low side as anybody who has visited Berlin (Turkish population of 100,000)or any other German or Dutch city or town will know. Unofficially, the number is estimated to be around 6 million in total. Two and a half million Turks live in Germany according to official data. With a further 500,000 Turks in France, 351,000 in the Netherlands, 250,000 in the United States, 200,000 in Austria and 138,000 in Australia. If memory serves, there are about 100,000 in the UK.

The Turkish Prime Minister has spoken of the need to mobilise the Turkish community in France to counter the country's powerful Armenian lobby. To date, Turkey has been singularly unable to wield its expats into a cohesive lobby. The problem is how?
For many Turkish immigrants in Europe, low educational achievement, a lack of career advancement in economic and social terms and a tendency to live in ethnic enclaves makes it impossible for them to influence the societies in which they live. In Germany alone, a study conducted by the Essen-based Center for Turkish Studies in 2005 found that a third of the Turks in Germany lives below the poverty level and that a further 35 percent lived just narrowly above the poverty level. Only about five percent of Turkish students studied at a high school that would lead to university.
Thus, one doubts that much of a Turkish lobby will emerge any time soon....but come the next crisis with Europe, we will hear again of the price for failing to create a Turkish lobby in Europe.

Istanbul Tory,

Thank you for your kind invitation to visit you at your own blog.

You correctly observed that for "many Turkish immigrants in Europe, low educational achievement, a lack of career advancement.. makes it impossible for them to influence the societies in which they live... A third of the Turks in Germany lives below the poverty level and that a further 35 percent lived just narrowly above the poverty level. Only about five percent of Turkish students studied at a high school that would lead to university."

The question is what is causing this poor performance?

According to the received wisdom of the socialist-oriented Left, poverty, social status, lack of language skills and lack of educational support programmes are responsible. Therefore, more teachers, social workers, and support programmes are demanded to solve the problem. Canada and Australia are cited as evidence that such programmes are working because in these countries differences between the children of natives and of immigrants have not been found (Link).

Unfortunately, this leaves the well-known major factor of school and job performance out of the equation: intelligence, i.e. cognitive ability, a trait with an heritability of 50-70%.

Canada and Australia have a highly restrictive immigration policy, selecting only the best. Many immigrants in these countries are from China, Korea and the educated class of India.

These populations have an average intelligence quotient (IQ) of 100 as compared to an average IQ of 90 for the population in Turkey (IQ and the Wealth of Nations). Additionally, the best and more successful Turks remain in their own country whereas less intelligent individuals prefer the benefits of the European welfare states. Hence, children of Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands have an average IQ of 85.

An average IQ of 85 for Turkish migrants is substantial different from the average IQ of 107 for the German population (see, Germans are brainiest). Compared to the world population, 84,44% have better cognitive abilities than the children of migrants from Turkey.

The underperformance of migrants from Turkey in comparison to the outstanding school performance of children from China, Vietnam and Korea in Europe, USA, Canada and Australia is hardly surprising if one takes the hereditary nature of cognitive abilities into consideration. Although everybody has first-hand experience of differences in cognitive abilities during his school years, inherited inequality is taboo. No amount of money, social programmes etc. is at present able to change inborn cognitive abilities.

What will the future bring for Europe if the present migration pattern continues?

The majority of migrants in Europe does not come from countries in the Far East but from the South. The world average IQ of 90 is declining from North to South.

And the situation is unlikely to get better, since the least intelligent people are having the most children which might explain the recent decline in intelligence. See also, Scientists sound the alarm: IQ is declining in industrialized countries.

In conclusion, the constant increase of people unable to cope with the requirements of industrialized countries will not solve the demographic crisis of the West, as is often claimed, but will instead lead to the collaps of the welfare state.

Greetings, Colin. You are most welcome.

Immigration, and overly generous welfare states tend to draw the “wrong” type of immigrants, the poorly-educated and those who would be likely to exploit the system, while the most educated, dynamic immigrants tend naturally to move to low-tax countries.

Certainly, ethnic minorities are far more prone to be welfare claimants than their white counterparts: in Britain, 28 per cent of all ethnic minority groups and 34 per cent of blacks receive social security benefits, compared with 18 per cent of whites....

British citizenship has been granted to nearly one million foreign nationals since Labour came to power in 1997 according to official figures. To its credit, Labour have finally put in place a new points-based work permit system (similar to the Australian system) which is designed to restrict long-term settlement to highly-qualified immigrants.

Istanbul Tory,

Thank you for the warm welcome.

"British citizenship has been granted to nearly one million foreign nationals since Labour came to power in 1997 according to official figures."

Professor Robert Rowthorn,
Economics Faculty, University of Cambridge, has published an interesting report about The Economic Impact of Immigration.

He wrote "The conclusion I draw from this literature is that large scale immigration of unskilled labour does harm the local workers who compete with them, possibly by a large amount. Moreover, the workers who are harmed are not simply those in the locality where the immigrants arrive. They may also be located in other parts of the country...we should not expect to see the harmful effects of immigration to show up only in the South. They will also show up in the depressed areas of Scotland, the North of England and other places which have a surplus of labour that is deterred from moving South by competition from foreign migrants."

In other words, Labour has abandoned the British workers.
